What is Pura Dalem Agung?

In Balinese, pura means temple, specifically, Balinese Hindu Temple. While Dalem Agung in Balinese means Great Temple of Death. Pura Dalem Agung is one of three Hindu temples in a temple complex that is located in Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. It is located in Padangtegal, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia.

Pura Dalem Agung is a place of worship for Hyang Widhi, the designation for one God in Balinese Hinduism, in the personification of Shiva that is known as the Transformer or Recycler. It is one of three temples in Monkey Forest in Ubud. Pura Dalem Agung is the Main Temple. It is located in southwestern part of Monkey Forest.

The second temple is Pura Beji. It is located in northwestern part of the park. It is a site to worship Hyang Widhi in the personification of goddess Gangga. The temple is also known as a place for physical and spiritual cleansing before religious ceremonies.

Last but not least is Pura Parapati. It is located in northeastern part of Monkey Forest. It is a place to worship Hyang Widhi in the personification of Prajapati. Adjacent to this temple, there is a cemetery. This cemetery is used as a place to bury bodies of the deceased temporarily while they wait for the mass cremation ceremony. The ceremony is held once every five years.

The temples in Monkey Forest are not merely a tourist spot. They have an important role in the spiritual life of the local community. This is why there is a dress code when you visit the temples.

Dress code and Entrance Fee

You need to wear specific items before you can enter Hindu temples in Bali. Thankfully, the dress code is quite simple. All you need to wear is a sarong and a scarf that you tie around your waist. Most of Hindu temples in Bali also rent a sarong or scarf. The price of rental for these two items varies. Normally, you need to pay around IDR 20.000 to rent a sarong and a scarf. Of course, you can also buy them at traditional art market or at the shop.

When it comes to the entrance fee, you all need to pay for the admission to Ubud Monkey Forest. The entrance fee for Ubud Monkey Forest is IDR 50.000. Once you pay for it, then you do not need to pay another entrance fee to get into the temples.

How to Go to Pura Dalem Agung?

You can go to Pura Dalem Agung by taxi or renting a private car. If your hotel is close to Monkey Forest, such as Anumana Ubud Hotel, Ubud Tropical Garden or Ubud Wana Villa, then you might want to go there by taxi because it is more convenient.
