Visiting Pulau Penyu, the Home of Thousand Turtles

Pulau Penyu (Turtle Island) is an interesting tourist attraction you have to visit. It is a small island located at the southern side of the island of Bali, an area named Nusa Dua. Location and how to access

Pulau Penyu itself is located in Tanjung Benoa, or Benoa Bay. However, if you are thinking that the island is separated from Bali, then you are incorrect. Pulau Penyu is still connected to the rest of Nusa Dua. Do you know how to reach Tanjung Benoa? It is fairly easy. From Kuta, you need to find a taxi or any four-wheeled vehicle. You can also use a bus. Then, ask the driver to go to Nusa Dua. Or, if you are driving, head to Bali Mandaran Toll Road. Follow the direction board and you will reach Tanjung Benua in half an hour. Then, head to the beach. You cannot use a car to reach Pulau Penyu. Instead, in order to reach the island, you can only use water transportation available in that area. The transportation itself is a glass bottom boat. It is a small boat which its bottom side contains a piece of glass. The glass allows the passengers to see the bottom of the sea through it.  In order to use the boat, you have to pay IDR 350,000/boat. The boat itself has a 10-person capacity. After you reach the island, you will have to pay entrance ticket which costs IDR 10,000 (for local tourist) or IDR 20,000 (for international tourist).

The purpose of the island

Aside from recreational purposes, Pulau Penyu holds an important role regarding the conservation of one of the endangered animals on the island, which is the sea turtle. The island houses thousands of turtles from various species, but most of them are green sea turtles. The turtles are raised since they were babies, then after the turtles reached maturity, they would be released to the sea. Their eggs are kept until they hatch, then the cycle happens again. The tourists who visit the island are allowed to take any pictures of the turtles, as long as they follow the rules in or de not to do any harm to the turtles.

Aside from the island, you can also enjoy the beach of Tanjung Benoa. The white sand beach is so beautiful and always crowded with tourists, either locally or internationally. The beach is also full of water sports equipment that you can rent at various prices. Most of them are not cheap, though, ranged from IDR 70,000 to 350,000. The cheapest is the banana boat which you can rent for IDR 70,000/hour.
